To travel from Singapore to Malaysia, the Shuttle Tebrau train reaches Johor Bahru without road congestion; buses offer more options for continuing to other cities. The right choice mainly depends on your destination, luggage and planned connections. A journey to Johor Bahru is not organised in the same way as a departure for Kuala Lumpur: in the first case, you are primarily choosing a border crossing; in the second, you must also organise the rest of the journey. In all cases, allow time for exit and entry checks, then check the formalities corresponding to your passport.
In brief
The road link crosses via the Causeway, between Woodlands and Johor Bahru, or via the Second Link, between Tuas and Malaysia. The Shuttle Tebrau railway service connects Woodlands Train Checkpoint with JB Sentral. These names refer to different points: do not choose your destination in an app simply because it contains “Woodlands”.
Woodlands is particularly suitable for travelling towards central Johor Bahru. JB Sentral is a useful landmark for continuing on foot in the central area or finding local transport after the checks.
Tuas is in western Singapore. This crossing may make sense for a coach travelling to a more distant Malaysian destination, but it is not systematically faster: the detour, queues at the checkpoints and your arrival point matter just as much as the traffic on the bridge.
| Option | Suitable use | Point to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Regular cross-border bus | Reaching Johor Bahru with a flexible departure | Road queues and re-boarding after the checks |
| Shuttle Tebrau | Crossing without depending on traffic on the Causeway | Ticket availability and access to the railway terminal |
| Long-distance coach | Continuing to Kuala Lumpur or Malacca | Drop-off address and instructions at the border posts |
For a departure from your accommodation, add the journey to the terminal, the wait before boarding, the checks and the journey after arrival. A short railway crossing may therefore require less flexible planning than a road service passing near your neighbourhood.
Consult our guide to things to do in Singapore to prepare the approach to your departure point. The best route is the one that simplifies the entire journey, not necessarily the one whose crossing appears to be the shortest.

Distinguish cross-border services from long-distance coaches. The former are mainly used for journeys between Singapore and Johor Bahru. The latter offer travel to a specific Malaysian city, with a departure point and arrival address to check before buying.
The journey generally involves getting off at the immigration posts, following the passenger route and then making your way to the re-boarding area. Instructions concerning luggage and which vehicle to board again depend on the service: listen to the driver and follow the directions on site.
On some regular services, you may continue in a following vehicle from the same network. Keep your proof of payment and check the connection conditions with the operator; do not assume that all companies accept the same ticket.
Travelling with a bulky suitcase makes getting off and back on less convenient. Keep your passport in a small closed bag rather than at the bottom of your main luggage, and locate your platform before joining a queue.
To continue beyond Johor Bahru, a long-distance service avoids having to look for a new departure immediately after the border. However, the word “direct” does not mean that there are no formalities: passengers must follow the required inspection process.
Before paying, check the exact pick-up point, final destination and the carrier’s policy if a passenger is delayed at immigration. In Kuala Lumpur, an address advertised in the metropolitan area may require an additional journey to your hotel.
Prices, timetables and payment methods change: consult the company’s official information. When comparing costs, also include urban transfers in your travel budget; the cheapest ticket is not always the most economical complete journey.
The Shuttle Tebrau, operated by KTMB, connects Woodlands Train Checkpoint with JB Sentral. Its main advantage is avoiding queues of cars and coaches. However, it does not remove border checks or the time needed to reach the terminal.
Check departures, fares and booking arrangements directly with KTMB. As purchasing conditions may change, avoid building your plans around a time slot until your ticket has been confirmed.
Check the direction of travel and the information requested for each passenger carefully. If the ticket is linked to an identity document, use the details from the passport with which you will travel.
Woodlands Train Checkpoint is not an MRT station. Plan your journey to the railway terminal and check the operator’s instructions regarding arrival before departure. Reaching Woodlands on the urban transport network does not mean that you have reached the boarding point.
In Johor Bahru, what comes next depends on your destination. For a visit to the centre, identify the appropriate exit and your local journey; to continue to Kuala Lumpur or elsewhere, separately check the services available on your travel date.
Do not confuse the border shuttle with a railway ticket covering the whole journey in Malaysia. Connections, stations served and seat availability must be checked with KTMB before putting the itinerary together.
A separate booking also means checking the exchange or refund conditions if you miss a connection. Rail reduces exposure to traffic jams, but does not remove the need to allow time between separately purchased journeys.
A transport ticket is not permission to enter. The applicable conditions depend in particular on your nationality, travel document and reason for the stay. Check them with the Malaysian Immigration Department before departure.
Check the required passport validity and whether you need a visa according to your situation. Being resident in Singapore is not, on its own, enough to determine the conditions for admission to Malaysia.
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, or MDAC, concerns arrival in Malaysia; the SG Arrival Card, or SGAC, concerns entry into Singapore. Check with the Malaysian Immigration Department and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority the requirements, exemptions and deadlines corresponding to your status.
For a return journey, examine each direction separately. Also prepare your accommodation address and documents useful for your stay; keep confirmations accessible offline while retaining the original documents required.
Checks on people and goods serve different purposes. After completing the immigration procedures, follow the customs instructions and declare the relevant goods according to the rules of the country you are entering.
Before carrying alcohol, tobacco, medicines or food products, check the restrictions with Singapore Customs and Malaysian customs. An item purchased legally in the country of departure is not necessarily freely importable in the country of arrival.
For medical treatment, also check the requirements of the relevant health authority concerning the substances being carried and the supporting documents. Do not carry parcels for a third party without knowing their contents precisely.
Digital inspection systems should not be interpreted as a general exemption from carrying a passport. Consult the ICA to find out who is eligible and see our page on Singapore visa procedures for French nationals to organise your documents: a smooth journey first depends on a file suited to your situation.
Avoid a tight connection after a road crossing. Crowds vary with commuting, weekend departures, holidays and celebrations on both sides of the border. No time slot guarantees a crossing without waiting.
Departures to Malaysia at the start of the weekend and returns to Singapore at the end of the weekend require particular care. Check the ICA’s traffic updates and your carrier’s communications before leaving your accommodation.
Also check the payment methods accepted for each part of the journey. Do not assume that a bank card, local transport card or e-wallet will work everywhere; plan a suitable back-up solution.
For your phone, check that your plan or eSIM covers the destinations concerned. Download tickets, addresses and connection instructions before departure so that you do not depend on the mobile network in the inspection halls.
If you are travelling to Changi after a stay in Malaysia, allow for uncertainty at the border and then the journey to the airport terminal. A night in Singapore beforehand may be preferable when delays would have serious consequences; our Singapore travel guide provides further help with planning your journey.
For a day trip to Johor Bahru, check the return journey before filling your schedule with sightseeing or shopping. Tourism and excursions around Singapore are best organised around available transport, rather than the other way round.
Finally, do not book solely on the basis of an announcement concerning the future RTS Link. Confirm its actual launch with the Land Transport Authority and the operator: an announced project is not a substitute for a service operating on your departure date.
The Shuttle Tebrau avoids road congestion, but requires an available seat and access to the railway terminal. The bus may offer a more convenient departure depending on your neighbourhood, with greater uncertainty about waiting times at the border.
No. The service may avoid a change of transport, but passengers must complete the exit and entry formalities. Follow the driver’s instructions concerning luggage and re-boarding.
Check separately the obligations relating to the MDAC for Malaysia and the SGAC for Singapore. Exemptions and deadlines depend on the rules applicable to your situation; consult the relevant authorities before each entry.
A tight connection is not recommended, particularly after a road journey. Allow plenty of time for the border and airport transfer, or even spend a night in Singapore if missing the flight would have serious consequences.
