The Student Pass Quest

Once your admission has been confirmed, the university starts your application on the SOLAR (Student’s Pass On-Line Application & Registration) system. You will receive an application number to complete your personal details.

  • Checking passport validity (> 6 months).
  • Preparing certified transcripts and diplomas.
  • Payment of application fees to the ICA (Immigration & Checkpoints Authority).

IPA Letter & Insurance

Once your application has been approved, you will receive the In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter. This document is CRUCIAL: it serves as a temporary visa for entering Singapore.

This is also the time to take out an appropriate healthcare plan. Although universities often provide basic cover, supplementary international insurance is strongly recommended.

“Singapore is a cultural and technological eye-opener. As a student at NTU, I discovered a way of learning that was very different from France. The hardest part? The freezing air conditioning in lecture theatres!”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I work part-time with a Student Pass? ↓

Yes, but under certain conditions. Students at public universities (NUS, NTU, SMU) are generally allowed to work up to 16 hours a week during term time and full-time during the holidays. Always check the wording on your visa!

What is a realistic minimum budget for a student? ↓

In 2026, allow at least 1,800 SGD per month if you live in university accommodation and eat local food. For greater comfort (a room in a condo, and a few outings), budget between 2,500 and 3,000 SGD.

Is it easy to make local friends? ↓

Singaporeans may seem reserved at first, but university clubs (CCAs) are the best way to break the ice. Sport and food are the two pillars of socialising here.

Do I need to speak Mandarin to study in Singapore? ↓

No, English is the language of teaching and work. However, knowing a little Mandarin or Malay can enrich your experience. See our language tips.

How should I manage my health while there? ↓

Every university has a medical centre. In emergencies, Singapore has world-class hospitals. International insurance is essential, as costs can rise very quickly.

What strict rules do I absolutely need to know? ↓

No imported chewing gum, do not smoke outside designated areas, no food on the MRT, and above all, zero tolerance for drugs. Follow these rules carefully to avoid heavy fines or deportation.

How do I open a student bank account? ↓

Go to DBS, OCBC or UOB with your passport, IPA Letter/FIN card and proof of admission. It is generally very quick. More information in the banking guide.

Is the climate difficult to cope with? ↓

It is hot and humid all year round (30–32°C). You get used to it, but always bring a jumper for air-conditioned interiors, which are often freezing!
